Human resources is one of the most accessible professional careers in India. Every organisation that employs people needs HR, from start-ups and hospitals to IT companies and manufacturers. Whether you are a fresher, a graduate from another field or a working professional who wants to move into HR, this guide explains how to become an HR professional in India, step by step.
What does an HR professional do?
HR professionals manage the full employee lifecycle: hiring the right people, onboarding them, running payroll, keeping the company compliant with labour law, managing performance and training, handling employee relations and processing exits. In smaller companies one HR generalist does all of this; in larger companies HR teams specialise in recruitment, payroll, HR operations, learning and development, or HR analytics.
Step 1: Get a degree
Most HR roles ask for a degree. A BBA or MBA in HR helps, but it is not essential: graduates in commerce, arts, science and engineering regularly move into HR after a practical HR course. If you want a degree route, see our BBA in HR and MBA in HR programmes with partner universities.
Step 2: Take a practical HR certification
A job-oriented HR certification is the fastest way to become employable in HR. Choose one that covers recruitment, payroll, statutory compliance (PF, ESI, professional tax, gratuity, bonus), India's four labour codes, HR policies and HR software, and that includes hands-on practice rather than theory alone. Read our guide to the best HR course for beginners in India.
Step 3: Build practical HR skills
- Processing a monthly payroll with statutory deductions
- Writing job descriptions, screening CVs and preparing offer letters
- Maintaining employee records in an HRMS
- Using an applicant tracking system (ATS) for recruitment
- Excel for HR reports: headcount, attrition and leave
- Drafting HR letters and policies
Step 4: Prepare your CV and interviews
Highlight your HR certification, the HR software you have used and any practical projects. Practise common HR interview questions on payroll calculations, labour law, recruitment and handling difficult employee situations. Mock interviews make a big difference.
Step 5: Get your first HR job
Typical first roles are HR executive, HR recruiter or talent acquisition executive, HR operations executive, payroll executive and HR and admin executive. HR training with placement support, such as CV writing, interview preparation and job referrals, helps freshers land these roles faster.
Step 6: Grow and specialise
After a year or two, many HR professionals specialise in HR analytics, HR technology such as SAP SuccessFactors, compensation and benefits, or international HR. Others move up to HR business partner, HR manager and HR head roles. If you want to work abroad, an international HR management course prepares you for HR roles in the Gulf and beyond.
HR certification for working professionals
If you already work, in HR or in another function, you can still become a certified HR professional without leaving your job. Look for live online or hybrid batches, weekend or flexible timings, and a course that lets you apply what you learn at work straight away. HR International Academy runs classroom batches in Calicut and live online and hybrid batches for working professionals across India, with special pricing for online and hybrid classes.
